Origin of our name…
Our non-profit organization "Ghetto Navy Foundation" uses a well-intended name from the textbook definition of “Ghetto” to draw attention to the historical and systemic struggles faced by youth from our targeted areas, negatively impacted by the post-slavery effects of redlining, segregation, and Jim Crow laws.
“Navy” in our name is a play on the meaning and symbolism of “water” and leading our youth to it, based on our organization's focus on promoting healing while addressing the underlying issues that have led to these struggles.
While our primary target audience is urban communities, the “Foundation” acknowledges that its reach extends beyond that group, recognizing the interconnectedness of various forms of marginalization and oppression.
Regardless if a child comes from a ghetto or not, or is in our target audience, we will serve all youth who face a challenge that we can help them overcome. Be it a disability or a lack of family support.
